What is a responsive web design?

Michael Ashworth 2014-01-08 12:00:00 AM Website Design

Responsive web design is a way of making a single website that works effectively on both desktop browsers and mobile devices. This idea stems from the notion of responsive architectural design, whereby a room or space automatically adjusts to the number and flow of people within it.

People who browse while on-the-go have very different needs than those sitting at a desk. Responsive websites re-organise themselves automatically according to the device viewing them, so that the same website provides a great experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling. Desktop users get the full-blown version with videos, large images and animation. Smartphone users get a simplified version that runs faster without the bells and whistles. Tablet and netbook users get something in between.
